OK, I'll bite. But what if the commitment to friendship compromises the mission? Might friendship even look different than sharing the same denominational tag, especially if it compromises the mission? I would suggest that the foundation of our friendship is our communion in the Triune, missional God. Subsequently, if we have fundamentally different views of who this God is and what He's calling us to do, our friendships will inevitably also look different than, let's say, the best of friends at times--and more like a mutual respect.

Given the tendency for any movement to become self-serving, it is good to revisit organizing principles periodically. In fact, this really is what we are doing each week when we hear the Word of God together. We reorient ourselves to see with Kingdom vision before we again set out on God's mission. Thanks for helping SPC to hold onto it's missional voice, Rick.

I agree that we must begin by ridding ourselves of destructive core values and beliefs. Perhaps then we will be able to adopt spiritual solutions to our global problems.

Love how you tie in the 3 EMC's, Rick! I think they're all genius'...felt like for the first time I understood a bit of how the world was working for the negative and positive and spirituality's influence, with Brian's book. And Alan has provided more out of the box thinking regarding the missional church than many of the writers...love his ideas too. And Jim's...all challenging us to look at how our faith can guide us to live differently in the world, and heal it as co-creators with God.

I am thankful that our country now appears to be moving toward broader public policy positions of social justice, which are more in keeping with the truly revolutionary message of the Gospel (good news) for the poor, oppressed and marginalized in our society.
.....ahhhh yes, I've been excited about this too. AND see how quickly the ideals of creating more just systems and structures in this society are overruled by those in power and with great wealth. The oil and coal companies are undermining the efforts to move to a sustainable energy future and impact the devastating affects of climate change, first impacted:the poor. The health insurance and pharmaceutical companies are working to stop any real reform in health care because by having a public option, their power over the system and money will decrease. And I could go on...it is essentail for people of faith to continually create relationship with their congresspeople who have impact over creating just systems and structures...and continue to serve as prophets, challenging them to work for the common good, not more good for the rich and powerful. We can change things...will we as people of faith?
